(Tabaquite Youth Movement for Sports and Culture)" Kristy "Caroling throughout the entire village of Tabaquite with my childhood friends and youth leaders, culminating with a Christmas concert we spent weeks preparing for. Just to experience all that a Trini Christmas has to offer is well worth the plane tickets. As a Trini living abroad, it's the most exciting time of the year. "My mom reciting the poem, "The Night Before Christmas " which she knew by heart." Claudette I think I liked it more and I definitely appreciated it more because I know that my mother being a single parent really went out of her way to make me happy since it’s always been my favourite holiday." Sade "I could have probably been around 6 or 7 and I really wanted a Tickle Me Elmo but we weren’t the richest growing up so I ended up getting a Sing and Snore Ernie whose tummy moved when he snored. "Going to sleep with the house in a mess and waking up to a complete transformation thanks to my sister, Rest In Peace." Leslie It makes me sad at times but the memories of how she transformed around that time also make me smile." Vaughnette Whenever I think of Christmas she is the first person I think about. She couldn’t do very much by the time I was a teen but she sure dictated the pace. Christmas was always the time when she became most animated. She was a beautiful, joyous, quiet woman who used her words sparingly (unlike me). "I was raised by grandparents and for most of those years, my grandmother didn’t experience the best of health. I love this walk down memory lane." Michelle The true gift is the peace, love and joy… The true gift is what we hold in our hearts, not our hands. Thankful he is here… So many Christmas memories and miracles… Baby’s first Christmas… Christmas where it was humble pie and others where it was a feast. "I remember one Christmas my cousin was paralyzed, but I saw my family come together… I remember walking on the day you go to bless toys and they asked each child to share what they were praying for… I prayed for his healing. She made it magical and while she doesn't and cannot do much anymore I carry on the traditions with my kids." Crystal "Putting up the tree and baking with mommy. I'm grown now with a family of my own, we live in Canada and try as we might, we haven't been able to duplicate that exact smell." Carl growing up the house would have this potent smell for the entire Christmas season. Ham, bread, pastelles, cake and every other thing that's synonymous with Trini Christmas. I wish I could bottle the smell of the house at Christmas time. ![]() I always smile when a song from Daisy Voisin is played during the season. Christmas cleaning punctuated with dance sessions to Daisy Voisin with my great-grandmother was and still IS my best memory of Christmas. after which we returned to our chores as if nothing happened a few seconds before. ![]() Her face brighter than a bulb, singing loudly, she knew every word, an 85-year-old with dance moves that could embarrass her younger counterparts…. A song from Daisy Voisin would come across the radio, brooms and dust-cloth immediately drop, she would grab my one of us (who ever was closest to her) and we would dance the entire song. In those days soca parang wasn’t popular yet, she would be directing my twin sister and me during the cleaning, very strict with what was he wanted from us. My favourite Christmas memory was when I was a teenager living with my great-grandmother, the house in total disarray, we were cleaning and the radio blasting Christmas music. Here we've compiled a list of favourite Christmas memories and traditions shared by some of our readers. Others look forward to the time to be spent with family and friends. ![]() Many live for the rush that accompanies the frenetic pace that tends to crescendo as the Christmas countdown winds down.įor others, it's the satisfaction that comes when all the cleaning is completed, curtains have been hung and scrumptious scents signalling the near-readiness of hams, freshly baked bread and other items that'll make up the family's festive feast- emanate from the kitchen. ![]() Christmas comes but once a year, but the memories made (whether good or bad) often last a lifetime.
